Max

15th September 2009

Max, a 11 year old staffordshire bull terrier, was referred to us after being diagnosed with hip dysplasia and osteo-arthritis. We decided to swim Max in the pool. This would be non weight bearing as the water would support his body weight. Also swimming would improve general cardio-vascular fitness, muscle mass and improve the range of movement of his joints.

Max really enjoyed coming for hydrotherapy and after picking out his favourite toy, we used this to help encourage him to swim around the pool. Initially starting off gently for 4 minutes with a rest half way through, he is now swimming for 15 minutes with 2 rests in the middle. After 2 courses of hydrotherapy his muscle mass has increased, equalising on both sides and improving balance and strength. He is displaying a lot less stiffness whilst out walking. We are very pleased with the progress Max has made.
